The National Museum of Finland was built in 1905-1910, and opened to the public in 1916. The building was designed by Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren, and Eliel Saarinen in the National Romantic style, and styled after Finnish medieval churches and castles. The interior was mainly completed in Art Nouveau. It became the National museum after Finnish independence in 1917.
